This is a unique opportunity to help shape a new team and be a part of building our business in Nashville! Mortenson is seeking a Business Development Manager to play a key part in differentiating our company in the Nashville market. You will be responsible for supporting the Nashville business development strategy, ultimately bringing in new business, engaging with potential and current customers, supporting leadership in building our brand in the market while also delivering marketing communication assets to support these efforts. Within a high-energy, fast-paced environment, you will be responsible for supporting a variety of business initiatives from pursuit strategy support to market presence opportunities, communications and branding. You are expected to deeply understand our work, our differentiators, and the needs of our customers and translate that knowledge into smart, high-quality content.

This includes developing a deep understanding of how Mortenson solves customer problems and developing key messages and impactful stories that illustrate our capabilities to customers and future recruits. Working closely with group leaders, you will take ownership of the local brand presence and share the right stories for the right targets at the right time.

Strong communication skills are necessary as you will be interacting with customers, partners, community leaders, team members and company leaders at all levels. Your ability to remain flexible, inventive, dedicated, and efficient with a high level of integrity and confidentiality is vital to your success.

What will you be doing?

The manager will be part of our Nashville Leadership team, reporting to the Vice President, General Manager of the Nashville office and be closely connected to our company's Strategic Marketing team.

Beyond managing competing priorities and deadlines, the manager is a critical part of our team, as this role is responsible for positioning our services and successfully engaging with targeted customers, from 1:1 meetings to speaking engagements to social media posts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Strategy and Outreach

  • Lead Business Development by identifying and coordinating new opportunities in the local market such as trade shows, byline articles, speaking opportunities, etc.
  • Facilitate interviews with key project and company executives to uncover insights and develop content that addresses our target audiences
  • Ability to think critically and support customer positioning strategies for targeted customer engagement, advancing positioning activities through research, messaging, content creation
  • Apply refined sales messaging skills to craft engaging headlines, calls to action, and talking points, with the ability to quantify value to our customers (value beyond features/benefits)
  • Research and learn new industries and service offerings, with the ability to identify key drivers and pain points shaping the customer's mindset, to develop accurate and cohesive narratives

Supervision

  • Proactively collaborate with Nashville leadership team to manage multiple deadline-driven projects at any giventime, monitoring timelines and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Manage incoming requests and facilitate planning and scheduling between business development, marketing teams, and executives
  • As the business grows, build a high-performing business development and marketing team, lead team members by example, offer effective coaching and feedback, and effectively manage performance

Content Management

  • Lead Business Development efforts to develop annual marketing strategies to support market growth and trajectory
  • Learn our customers and their industries to ensure all work product reflects the customer's language and resonates with the target audience
  • Create materials to augment customer interactions including exhibitions, customer meeting collateral, advertising, publicity, awards, website content, social media, and email
  • Work with marketing team members to write articles with key messages demonstrating Mortenson thought leadership, addressing common customer pain points and needs
  • Work with marketing team to manage the Nashville digital presence, including updates to Nashville webpage and social media posts
  • Coordinate with multiple functions within the operating group (Marketing, Business Development, Estimating, Design Phase, Real Estate Development, Operations, and more) to effectively craft compelling stories of differentiation within the markets we serve

Pursuit Process

  • Serve in a leadership role with the pursuit team to win projects through a competitive proposal process
  • Lead the production process of proposals and presentations to ensure the right message is crafted for key customer stakeholders identified. This requires facilitating the right interactions between business development, design phase leaders and construction executives on a clear timeline that you will establish at pursuit kick-off
  • Guarantee timeliness and quality of each stage of proposal development to completion
  • Act as principal editor for all pursuit materials, qualifications, proposals, and interviews

Internal Communications + Project Support

  • Develop internal communication plans to regularly engage team members, such as regular newsletters, intranet site, and office/project signage
  • Support construction project teams to brand their sites, and promote the project's story as appropriate with the customer
  • Plan and execute events including the group's annual meeting (in partnership with corporate communications), regular all-hands meetings, and more
  • Build/maintain efficient marketing processes and record keeping for optimal data management

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expert in creating high quality messages and visuals in PowerPoint and InDesign - sharp ability to visually organize information to quickly convey the core message
  • Can-do approach to collaboration to partner with leaders to deliver the right message to the right customers at the right time
  • Judgement to scope the right amount of effort required to achieve each desired goal, as this will vary widely depending on the project
  • Adaptive, effective communication and interpersonal skills with those of diverse organizational levels and backgrounds
  • Agility to lead a fast-paced team; adept at organizing, tracking and delivering multiple assignments at once, future state

How will you succeed?

  • Experience in a professional services industry (versus product companies)
  • Ability to create systems and processes to document work product for others to access
  • Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • B2B experience writing key messages for target customer audiences (samples may be requested)
  • Leverage problem solving capabilities to ensure success on a variety of public and private pursuits
  • Experience in Salesforce.com, OneNote
  • 6+ years of experience in B2B writing/content marketing/story telling or sales enablement, winning customer pursuits, proposal writing

Education

  • 4-year degree in Marketing, Communications or Business or relevant degree
